Sniffer dog used on Maddie case failed to find any trace of Kate Prout..BUT sniffer dog did find trace of Madeleine and reacted in several hot spots..this man charged without a body and without a sniffer dog reacting...NOW here is the million dollar question ..had the dog reacted???? would this have been an 'unreliable' response? I think not as he was already suspected of killing his wife.

A MAN was yesterday charged with the murder of his wife - whose body has never been found.

Retired teacher Kate Prout, 55, vanished from her £1.2million farmhouse home on Bonfire Night 2007.

Husband Adrian, 46, reported her missing five days later.

Police have carried out huge searches of their 200-acre farm involving up to 100 officers.

They emptied a grain store and scoured ponds and a reservoir in vain.

And a specialist sniffer dog which took part in the hunt for Madeleine McCann failed to find any trace of Kate - who went missing days before the couple's seventh anniversary.

Mr Prout, who runs a pipelaying and civil engineering business, has already been arrested and questioned twice.

Six weeks ago his police bail was cancelled.

But yesterday Gloucestershire Police announced he had been held at his home in Redmarley.

Magistrates at Cheltenham remanded Prout in custody to appear before Bristol Crown Court next Tuesday.

Acting Det Supt Neil Kelly said: "This has been a complex, lengthy investigation.

"I would like to thank all those affected, especially Mrs Prout's friends and family, for their understanding, tolerance and patience."
